What Are Interlacement
What I call Interlacement is similar to arithmancy (divination by the use of numbers). I designed the Oracle cards of this deck with Interlacement in mind. Interlacement is about the relationships of the cards to each other, based on their numbers. I don't think of the numbers, themselves, I think about the cards and which cards are connected with which other cards. |
While I studied the Tarot with my teacher, I began to get a sense that the cards were connected through their numbers. For example, I sensed that the Aces had characteristics of the Magician. The fifth cards seemed to connect with the shadow side of the Hierophant. So when I designed an Oracle card, I felt into which Trump it connected to and gave it the appropriate number. |
How Interlacements Work
Interlacement relationships are identified by adding two numbers together. For example the No. 18 card: 1 + 8 = 9.
The number 9, then, connects all cards that add up to 9: 9~Repose, 18~Moonlight, 27~Imaginalis, and 36~Divine Presence.
The number 9, then, connects all cards that add up to 9: 9~Repose, 18~Moonlight, 27~Imaginalis, and 36~Divine Presence.
Some of what these cards share in common – to me – is otherworldliness, that all earthly life is nested within a metaphysical higher reality.
Another example: 1~Magic & 10~Seasons. One of the many connection I see is that each creates tremendous change when you flow with it.
Invitation to Find Your Own Interpretations
My teacher wanted me to read the Tarot in the way only I could read it because she believed that each of us makes a powerfully unique contribution. She demanded that I tap into my own connection with inner wisdom/divine knowing. She made that possible by resting the urge to impart her knowledge to me. Her teaching consisted of throwing the ball back into my court over and over when I turned to her for the answers.
I am doing the same – resisting the urge to share too many of my own impressions of the Interlacements and throwing the ball back into your court – so you can tap into your own impressions. I've created the system and that's where I want to leave it for now. No doubt in future classes, this will come up and I'll guide students on their journey of discovery like my teacher did for me. In the meantime, I encourage you to discover your own beautiful interpretations of those relationships.
My teacher suggested that I not read up on the Tarot until I'd developed my own unique relationships with the cards. Now you may already be a great Tarotist. I invite you to put a pin in what you know and come to The Mystic's Tarot & Oracle Cards with Child's Mind (see card #0.)
I work with my clients in the same way. I do have a sense of what the spread conveys but I work with my clients in collaboration. At first, I describe something about the cards, just as I’m doing in this online book. Then I turn over the reins. Here, with each card, I'm turning over the reins to you.
I’m always there to guide you if you get stuck. Most of the time, though, the space of love and confidence the cards set, helps you tap into a larger circle of divine awareness.
I trust that your inner wisdom will guide you in developing your own lexicon.
